In a recent podcast, Josh Bersin talked about how artificial intelligence is changing inside large companies. He described a move from simple productivity tools to more advanced systems, which he calls “Superagents.” In HR, this shift could change how companies run their daily work by giving more control to automated systems.

He used a car example to explain the stages. An AI “Assistant” is like power steering or power brakes. These tools help people work better, but the person is still fully in charge. An “Agent” is closer to features like lane assist or collision alerts. These systems can take over for short periods under certain rules.

A “Superagent,” he said, is like a fully self-driving car built by companies such as Waymo or Zoox. Instead of helping with small tasks, it focuses on the full goal—getting from one place to another—without a driver. In these cars, the steering wheel or even the driver’s seat may no longer be needed.

In HR, this could mean a major change. A Superagent for hiring would not just support recruiters; it could reshape what their jobs look like. In learning and development, it could reduce the need for many traditional course design roles. Rather than improving one task at a time, Superagents manage entire workflows from start to finish. This can simplify operations and support larger business goals.

The speaker also mentioned the idea of a “digital twin.” This is a system that does more than support an expert. It copies much of that person’s skills and decision-making ability. That gives professionals more time to focus on planning and high-level work.

The main point is clear: by 2026, companies may move from assistants to agents to Superagents. This shift will not only improve output. It could also reshape company structure and AI strategy at a basic level.
