French IT services giant Capgemini has announced a significant restructuring of its global workforce, signaling a decisive shift toward an “AI-first” delivery model.

On January 20, 2026, the company confirmed plans to reduce its headcount in France by approximately 2,400 roles.

Simultaneously, it prepares to onboard up to 45,000 new professionals in India with specialized skills in Artificial Intelligence and Cloud technologies.

The “Voluntary” Pivot in France by Capgemini

The reduction in France represents roughly 7% of the company’s domestic workforce.

This move is a direct response to cooling demand in the European manufacturing and automotive sectors, which have significantly tightened IT budgets.

Capgemini is navigating this transition through a “voluntary departures” framework, adhering to strict French labor laws.

Beyond departures, the company is launching internal retraining programs.

This initiative aims to reskill employees from stagnant industrial divisions and redeploy them into high-growth areas, including data engineering and sovereign cloud services

Analysts estimate the restructuring costs in France could exceed €100 million, with the goal of lifting domestic operating margins to 12% by 2027.

India: The Global Engine for AI Transformation

Contrasting the European slowdown, Capgemini India is embarking on one of the industry’s most aggressive recruitment drives.

CEO Ashwin Yardi confirmed that the company aims to hire between 40,000 and 45,000 employees by the end of 2026.

Notably, 35% to 40% of these will be lateral hires—experienced professionals tasked with leading complex AI-led transformation programs.

This hiring spree is not merely about scale but about transforming India into a global “Centre of Excellence” for Agentic AI.

The company has already forged partnerships with over 50 Indian academic institutions to develop AI-focused curriculums.

These partnerships ensure a steady pipeline of “AI-ready” talent.

With nearly 175,000 employees already in India, the region now serves as the primary hub for Capgemini’s global delivery.

This hub is absorbing work previously handled in higher-cost markets.

A New Era of “Human-AI Chemistry”

The dual strategy highlights a broader industry trend: the “rebalancing” of talent toward regions with high-tech proficiency and cost efficiency.

Capgemini is moving from “AI hype” to “AI realism” by prioritizing workforce upskilling and infrastructure over traditional consulting in its 2026 roadmap.

This strategy positions the firm to lead the next wave of intelligent operations.
