PM Modi Urges Investment in Data Centres to Drive Economic Growth and Skills

PM Modi has highlighted the data centre sector as a critical pillar for India’s economic future, describing it as a “massive job creator.”
Speaking at recent industry forums, the Prime Minister emphasized that as India transitions into a fully digital economy, the infrastructure required to store and process data will generate hundreds of thousands of high-quality employment opportunities across the country.
PM Modi Positions India as a Global Data Hub
The Prime Minister noted that India is uniquely positioned to become a global hub for data centres due to its vast digital footprint, affordable power initiatives, and a robust talent pool.
He pointed out that the government is actively working on policies to simplify the setting up of these facilities.
By granting “infrastructure status” to data centres, the government has already paved the way for easier credit flow and increased foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector.
The push for local data storage is not just about security but also about economic sovereignty.
PM Modi stated that keeping Indian data within the country creates a secondary ecosystem of maintenance, cybersecurity, and hardware manufacturing, all of which require skilled manpower.
Impact on Employment and Skill Development
The expansion of the data centre industry is expected to create jobs in various segments.
These segments include construction, power management, facility operations, and specialized IT roles.
To meet this demand, the Prime Minister called for a synergy between academia and industry to create a workforce “future-ready” for the cloud era.
He highlighted that the growth of these centres would not be limited to Tier-1 cities.
Under the “Digital India” vision, the government is encouraging the establishment of edge data centres in smaller towns.
This initiative will decentralize job opportunities and drive regional economic development.
Sustainability and the Future
PM Modi also underscored the importance of “Green Data Centres.”
He urged industry leaders to integrate renewable energy sources into their operations, aligning with India’s net-zero commitments.
This shift toward sustainable infrastructure will create further roles in the renewable energy and environmental consulting sectors.
The Prime Minister reiterated that the data centre industry is the “backbone of the 21st century.”
He stated that its growth will be a primary engine for achieving the goal of a $5 trillion economy.
