MCD Approves Equal Pay for 4,000 Multi-Tasking Staff

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has officially approved the implementation of “equal pay for equal work” for its Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS).
The decision, sanctioned by Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, is set to provide significant financial relief and professional pay parity to approximately 4,000 employees currently working across various departments of the civic body.
A Major Win for Contractual and Substitute Workers
The approval specifically targets MTS workers who were previously receiving lower wages despite performing duties identical to those of regular employees.
This group primarily includes “substitute” (evadhi) and contractual workers who have been backbone of the MCD’s ground-level operations for years.
Under the new directive, the civic body will now entitle these employees to the minimum pay scale of the regular MTS cadre, significantly narrowing the income gap that had persisted for decades.
MCD Strengthening the Civic Workforce
Mayor Shelly Oberoi emphasized that the decision is not merely a financial adjustment but a move toward social justice and administrative efficiency.
For years, the MCD has faced protests and legal challenges regarding the disparate pay structures between regular and temporary staff.
By aligning these wages, the administration aims to boost employee morale, reduce turnover, and improve the quality of essential services provided to the citizens of Delhi.
The 4,000 beneficiaries include workers involved in various roles such as office maintenance, sanitation support, and departmental assistance.
This move follows a series of recent pro-worker initiatives by the current MCD leadership.
These include the regularization of several thousand sanitation workers (swachhata karmcharis) over the past year.
Financial Implications and Implementation
The MCD administration has cleared the files for the immediate rollout of the revised pay structure.
The move will increase the civic body’s monthly wage bill. Officials stated that they adjusted the budget to accommodate this essential expenditure.
The human resources department has been directed to ensure a seamless transition. This ensures workers see the reflected increase in their upcoming salary cycles.
This policy shift is seen as a strategic effort to stabilize the MCD’s workforce.
It supports the city as it prepares for upcoming infrastructure challenges and seasonal sanitation drives.
