PM-SETU to Modernize 1,000 ITIs with Corporate Help

In a significant move to bridge the gap between vocational training and industrial requirements, the Indian government has launched ‘PM-SETU’ (Strategic Engagement for Talent Upgradation).
This ambitious initiative aims to transform Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country through deep-seated industry partnerships, ensuring that the Indian workforce is equipped for the challenges of Industry 4.0.
PM-Setu Scheme: A New Era of Industry-Led Skill Development
The PM-SETU scheme represents a paradigm shift in the management of ITIs.
Moving away from a purely bureaucratic model, the initiative invites top-tier corporate players to take an active role in the governance and curriculum design of these institutes.
By allowing industry leaders to oversee training protocols, the government aims to ensure that students are learning on the latest machinery and mastering skills that are currently in high demand, such as robotics, green energy, and advanced manufacturing.
Modernizing Infrastructure and Curriculum
Under PM-SETU, selected ITIs will undergo a massive technological overhaul.
Partnering companies are encouraged to set up ‘Centres of Excellence’ within the campuses.
These centers will provide students with hands-on experience in real-world production environments.
The curriculum is being redesigned to include modular courses that can be updated rapidly as technology evolves.
This ensures that graduates are not just “certified” but are “job-ready” from day one, significantly reducing the training costs for employers.
PM-Setu Scheme Boosting Employability and ‘Make in India’
The primary objective of PM-SETU is to enhance the employability of India’s youth.
The scheme aligns training with the ‘Make in India’ vision.
It aims to create a steady pipeline of highly skilled technicians for the manufacturing, automotive, and electronics sectors.
The program also emphasizes soft skills and digital literacy, preparing students for a globalized workplace.
Early reports suggest that ITIs participating in the pilot phase have seen a marked increase in placement rates and starting salaries for their graduates.
Incentivizing Private Participation
To encourage corporate involvement, the government is offering various incentives, including CSR eligibility for investments made in ITI upgradation.
Industry partners gain a direct say in the selection of candidates. Furthermore, they have the ability to tailor training to their specific supply chain needs.
This symbiotic relationship is expected to revitalize the vocational education ecosystem. It will make ITIs the preferred destination for technical talent in India.
