Amazon Layoffs India 2026: Over 500 Roles to be Cut

Amazon has initiated a fresh wave of layoffs in India as part of a major global retrenchment, with sources confirming that at least 500 to 700 employees across the country are being impacted.
This regional downsizing is a subset of a massive worldwide reduction involving 16,000 corporate roles. The e-commerce giant announced this move in late January 2026.
Amazon Tech and HR Teams Bear the Brunt
The current round of job cuts in India is hitting teams across Amazon Web Services and retail operations.
The reductions also affect the Human Resources division, known as People Experience and Technology.
According to internal reports, the impact is split almost evenly between e-commerce and cloud divisions.
Software Development Engineers (SDEs) and support roles linked to global functions are reportedly among the hardest hit in tech hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
The layoffs in the retail sector are partly attributed to a lackluster performance during recent major sales events.
The company allegedly lost traction to competitors during these periods.
Meanwhile, AWS cuts are being linked to a global shift in priorities toward “Project Dawn,” an internal initiative aimed at streamlining high-growth areas like generative AI.
Corporate Restructuring: “Culture over Finance”
In a memo to staff, Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, framed the decision as a strategic move to “reduce layers, increase ownership, and remove bureaucracy.”
CEO Andy Jassy has previously signaled that the company over-hired during the pandemic and is now focused on returning to a “start-up culture” that prioritizes speed and efficiency.
Some analysts point to the increasing use of AI and automation as a driver for these surplus roles.
However, Jassy has maintained that the restructuring is primarily structural.
This latest round follows a similar exercise in October 2025, bringing the total number of corporate roles eliminated by Amazon in the last six months to nearly 30,000.
Employee Support and Transition
Impacted employees in India have begun receiving notices in batches.
To support those affected, Amazon is providing a transition period with full pay and benefits.
The company is also offering severance packages and outplacement services as part of the separation.
In some cases, employees are being given a 90-day window to apply for other internal roles.
However, the company’s badge access policy has seen immediate restrictions for many.
