India’s biggest stock broker company, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath is worried about the friendship recession.

Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath has shared a Tweet from his official Twitter handle saying, “The more #philosophy you read (not stoic), having a community seems to be the biggest precursor to #happiness (as fleeting as it might be).”

“I have 5 bros in my life I would do all for, life-changing this is, seriously”, the tweet added.

The American Perspective survey by Daniel Cox described the friendship recession as the rise in the number of people who lack a certain number of close friends.

He shared a few infographics from a 2021 survey by the American Perspective that described friendship recession as the rise in the number of people who lack a certain number of close friends and fewer people to rely on in terms of crisis. 

The factors contributing to the decline included:-

• Geographic Mobility
• Increased parental focus on child-rearing.
• Work-Centric culture and “workism”
• Breakdown of relationships leading to separation of friend group.

Additionally the effects of having fewer Friends:-

• Lack of opportunities and job creation.
• Negative effect on metal and physical health.
• Feelings of sadness and loneliness.

The Survey also highlighted that the friendship recession could become a serious crisis in the future as loneliness is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. 

This survey also said that if the trend continues there could be more “atomized individuals and a dystopian outlook”. Additionally, The lesser number of friends in our lives would also increase ” sadness and ill health.” The survey has also shown that female friendship has seen a decline during the pandemic.

Humans are weird to be social and friendship are crucial for well-being. However, external factors and pressures have hindered the formulation and maintained of friendships.

In reply the Twitter user said, “Friendship is a relationship where there is nothing in it for you other than the relationship”.

“Friendship is not a flower that just blooms all on its own. It’s more like a woodworking project that you have to carve out and continue to work on”, the tweet added.
