Elon Musk has issued a public apology to candidates previously rejected by his artificial intelligence startup, xAI.

Acknowledging that the company “was not built right the first time around,” Elon Musk revealed that he is now personally reviewing past interview records to reconnect with high-potential applicants who were originally declined or overlooked.

Foundational Reset and Leadership Exodus

This talent pivot comes amidst a massive internal restructuring at xAI, which Elon described as a “rebuild from the foundations up,” drawing parallels to the early struggles of Tesla.

The overhaul follows a significant leadership shakeup; reports indicate that out of the 11 original co-founders, only two remain.

Recent departures include co-founders Yuhuai “Tony” Wu and Jimmy Ba, as well as senior researchers like Haotian Liu.

Elon admitted that the initial organizational structure failed to support xAI’s long-term ambitions, leading to “bureaucracy and middle management” issues that stifled innovation.

By revisiting the “rejected pile,” Elon aims to correct earlier hiring missteps that may have cost the company top-tier engineering talent during its turbulent first phase.

A Personal Approach to Talent Acquisition by Elon Musk

Moving away from traditional HR filters, Elon stated on X that he is working closely with talent strategist Baris Akis to manually sift through the company’s interview history.

Elon aims to identify “promising candidates” who demonstrated high agency and technical brilliance but suffered from the startup’s early structural flaws.

This “hiring reset” is paired with a strategic consolidation.

Following SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI earlier this year, the company is integrating physical and digital intelligence resources.

New high-profile hires, such as former Mistral and Meta researcher Devendra Singh Chaplot, signal a fresh start as xAI attempts to close the gap with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Challenging the AI Giants by 2026

Despite the recent churn, Elon remains characteristically aggressive about the company’s trajectory.

He predicts that by the end of 2026, xAI will not only match but significantly surpass current industry leaders.

The focus remains on strengthening coding capabilities and developing “Digital Optimus,” a system designed to perform the functions of entire companies using Tesla’s AI4 chips.
