Tejaswini Initiative: Hindustan Zinc is Redefining Women’s Roles in Heavy Industry

Hindustan Zinc has officially launched ‘Tejaswini,’ a specialized all-women operational team at its Chanderiya Smelting Complex (CSC).
This initiative marks the first time a core operational section at the facility—specifically the Leaching and Purification unit—will be managed entirely by women professionals across all shifts, including nights.
Hindustan Zinc Breaking Barriers in Metallurgical Operations
The Chanderiya Smelting Complex is located near Chittorgarh. It is recognized as one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced zinc smelting hubs.
The ‘Tejaswini’ team consists of 30 highly skilled women engineers and operators who have taken full charge of the hydrometallurgy processes.
Their responsibilities include critical process monitoring, maintenance, and safety functions that directly impact zinc production efficiency and product quality.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized that the launch reflects a strategic belief that the future of mining is diverse.
The company is placing women at the heart of large-scale metallurgical processes.
This demonstrates that leadership and technical capability transcend traditional gender boundaries in the manufacturing sector.
Leading the Way in Gender Diversity
Hindustan Zinc currently boasts a gender diversity ratio of 26.3%, the highest in India’s metals and mining industry.
The company employs over 745 women, with more than 314 serving in core engineering and operational roles.
‘Tejaswini’ is the latest in a series of pioneering moves by the company.
It follows the establishment of India’s first all-women underground mine rescue team and the deployment of female officers in underground night shifts.
These efforts align with the broader vision of the Vedanta Group to achieve 35% women representation across its global workforce.
To support this transition, the company has implemented advanced safety protocols and inclusive infrastructure.
They are also using digital tools like tele-remote mining and automation to reduce physical labor and make technical roles more accessible.
A Future-Ready Workforce
Tanya Singh, the Plant Manager at the Leaching & Purification unit, leads the project. She oversees the team’s goal of achieving operational excellence.
As the industry moves toward a low-carbon and technologically driven future, initiatives like ‘Tejaswini’ serve as a blueprint for an equitable workplace.
In this environment, talent and innovation drive industrial performance.
