IIT Kharagpur Unveils New Certification for Working Engineers

In a landmark move coinciding with its Platinum Jubilee Year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has officially entered the online executive education space.

The institute has launched four advanced certification programs focused on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Technology Leadership, aiming to bridge the gap between academic theory and production-ready AI deployment.

IIT Kharagpur Expanding Access to Cutting-Edge Tech

The initiative marks the first time India’s oldest IIT has offered executive programs in a fully online format.

IIT Kharagpur and upGrad developed the curriculum for working professionals who need to master high-demand skills like Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), and agent-based systems.

The initial rollout includes four specialized tracks:

• Generative AI & Agentic AI: Focusing on the next frontier of autonomous AI systems.
• AI-Native Software Engineering: Integrating AI into the core software development lifecycle.
• Applied AI & Machine Learning: Delivering practical, job-ready ML capabilities.
• Technology and AI Leadership: Tailored for senior professionals driving digital transformation.

Bridging the Industry-Academia Gap

Professor Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur, emphasized that the programs are built for “practitioners who seek true capability.”

Unlike introductory courses, these certifications focus on building systems that function under real-world constraints and scale.

The curriculum is backed by the institute’s robust research ecosystem, with faculty contributing to prestigious global platforms such as NeurIPS, ICML, and IEEE.

The live online sessions ensure that experienced engineers and technical leaders gain direct access to the same rigorous engineering discipline that has earned IIT Kharagpur the 5th rank in the NIRF 2025 Engineering category.

Eligibility and Future Expansion

Applications are currently open for software engineers, ML practitioners, and mid-to-senior leaders.

While the current launch establishes a strong foundation, the institute plans a phased expansion, with additional online offerings expected to debut within the next three to six months.

This strategic push reflects IIT Kharagpur’s ongoing commitment as an “Institute of Eminence.”

The goal is to provide affordable, impactful technological solutions that address both national priorities and global workforce challenges.
