Tata Group to Double TCS Workforce in Uttar Pradesh to 30,000

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has proposed the development of a dedicated “AI City” in Lucknow and increase TCS workforce.
This landmark announcement came following a high-level meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday, December 15, 2025.
Central to this vision is a massive expansion plan for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which aims to nearly double its workforce in the state from the current 16,000 to approximately 30,000 employees.
Scaling the Digital Frontier: TCS Expansion
The proposed expansion focuses on significantly scaling operations at TCS units in Lucknow and Noida.
By increasing the headcount to 30,000, TCS is positioning Uttar Pradesh as a primary hub for its global delivery model.
This surge in high-skill employment is expected to provide a substantial boost to the state’s digital talent pool, offering local youth access to global projects without needing to migrate to traditional IT hubs like Bengaluru or Hyderabad.
In addition to workforce expansion, the Tata Group is exploring the establishment of a Global Capability Centre (GCC)in the state.
These centers are critical for high-end research, shared services, and technological innovation, further cementing UP’s status as a burgeoning destination for the IT and ITeS sectors.
The AI City Vision: A Global Tech Hub
The proposed AI City in Lucknow is envisioned as a world-class ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence, research, and development. The project aims to:
- Foster a robust startup ecosystem by providing specialized infrastructure for AI-driven enterprises.
- Attract global technology firms to set up innovation labs and R&D centers.
- Generate thousands of indirect employment opportunities in future-ready technologies.
This initiative aligns with the state’s broader goal of becoming a trillion-dollar economy.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized that the state is committed to providing a stable policy framework and a business-friendly environment to facilitate these transformative projects.
Skilling and Educational Integration
Recognizing that a massive workforce requires a ready talent pipeline, the Tata Group has already made significant strides in education.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Kanpur, the group will train young professionals in emerging fields such as cybersecurity, data science, 3D printing, drones, and space technology.
Furthermore, the progress of a Rs 48-crore Centre of Excellence in Gorakhpur was reviewed during the meeting.
“The facility aims to empower youth from the Purvanchal region directly. By doing so, it ensures that the technology boom benefits all geographic areas of the state.
A Multi-Sector Partnership
The collaboration between the Tata Group and the Uttar Pradesh government extends far beyond IT. The discussions highlighted investments in several critical sectors:
- Electronics: A partnership with Intel is being explored to strengthen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem, including mobile devices and components.
- Defense: Increased investment in the UP Defense Industrial Corridor, specifically in Jhansi and Babina, for the production of drones, missiles, and defense vehicles.
- Green Energy: Tata Power is advancing a 1,900 MW thermal unit in Prayagraj alongside multiple solar projects to support clean energy goals.
- Hospitality: To support the state’s growing tourism, 30 new hotels under the Taj, SeleQtions, and Vivanta brands are currently under construction across major cultural centers like Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur.
“This comprehensive partnership signifies a long-term commitment to the industrial and technological self-reliance of Uttar Pradesh.
It promises a future where the state stands at the forefront of the global digital economy.
