UNICEF Opens Applications for Strategic Engagement Internship

UNICEF has opened applications for its Thought Leadership and Strategic Engagement Internship under the Global Programme Division (GPD), giving young professionals a chance to gain experience in global policy, communications, and programme delivery.
The internship is based at its New York Headquarters, with an option to work remotely depending on time zone compatibility.
Programme Overview and Structure
This full-time internship is set to start in June 2026 and will last for three months. It is hosted in the Director’s Office of the Global Programme Division, which plays an important role in shaping global programme standards and connecting policy with on-ground work across more than 190 countries.
The role is meant to support UNICEF’s growing focus on strengthening programme thought leadership and strategic engagement. As the division moves from its set-up stage to active delivery, the internship gives direct exposure to key strategic work and global development priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Interns will work across two main areas—programme thought leadership and strategic engagement. On the thought leadership side, tasks include helping build knowledge platforms such as journal or field notes series and staff working papers. Interns will also support internal engagement efforts that promote learning and teamwork across groups.
For strategic engagement, the role includes helping with external communications, such as drafting LinkedIn articles, improving newsletters, and reviewing digital communication channels. Interns will also help create clear messaging and support coordination of engagement efforts both inside and outside the organization.
Eligibility and Skills Required
The UNICEF internship is open to candidates who are currently studying or have recently completed a graduate degree in fields like business, economics, social sciences, communications, or international development.
Strong writing, analytical thinking, and project management skills are required, along with the ability to work well in a diverse and team-based environment.
Fluency in English is required, while knowledge of other UN languages and basic experience with digital or content tools is a plus.
Learning Outcomes and Benefits
By the end of the programme, interns are expected to help produce at least one published thought leadership piece and support the setup of clear communication and engagement processes.
The role gives exposure to senior-level decision-making, global policy discussions, and strategic communications within a mission-driven organization.
Application Timeline
Applications for the UNICEF internship are open until April 21, 2026 at UNICEF’s Career Page. It has stated that the role does not promise a job after completion but offers strong learning and networking opportunities within the global development field.
This internship offers a solid chance for young professionals to work on global development issues while supporting efforts aimed at improving the lives of children around the world.
