Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has formalized a massive expansion plan in Gujarat, committing an investment of ₹35,000 crore to establish a new greenfield manufacturing facility.

Officials finalized the announcement during an investment letter handover ceremony in Gandhinagar.

This event sent the automaker’s shares climbing nearly 2% on Monday as investors cheered the long-term growth roadmap.

A Milestone for the ‘Make in India’ Vision

The new plant will be situated at Khoraj, near Sanand in the Ahmedabad district, spanning approximately 1,750 acres of land provided by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

Maruti Suzuki designed the facility to produce 10 lakh units annually, significantly bolstering its presence in the world’s third-largest automobile market.

According to Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, the project will be developed in phases, with the first production line expected to become operational in the financial year 2028-29.

Maruti Suzuki Strategic Roadmap to 4 Million Units

This investment is a cornerstone of “Maruti 3.0,” the company’s ambitious strategy to double its total annual production capacity to 4 million units by 2030-31.

The Khoraj plant will complement Maruti’s existing Gujarat facility at Hansalpur.

The company also plans to expand the Hansalpur site to reach a 10-lakh unit capacity by FY 2026-27.

The modular design of the new Khoraj site features four distinct manufacturing units, each capable of producing 2.5 lakh vehicles annually.

This flexibility allows the company to scale production across various powertrains. These include petrol, CNG, hybrids, and electric vehicles as market demands evolve.

Economic Impact and Employment

The project will be a major economic catalyst for the region:

  • Direct Jobs: Approximately 12,000 new roles at the main plant.
  • Indirect Employment: An estimated 7.5 lakh opportunities through the development of ancillary units and MSMEs.
  • Global Export Hub: The capacity boost supports Maruti’s goal of exporting 7.5 lakh to 8 lakh vehicles annually. The company aims to reach this target by the end of the decade.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel hailed the move as a reinforcement of Gujarat’s status as a global automobile hub.

He noted that the state’s policy-driven governance continues to attract high-value international partnerships.
