Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has initiated another round of layoffs, this time impacting approximately 600 employees from its Superintelligence Labs division.

The move is part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at streamlining operations and intensifying focus on artificial intelligence and future technologies.

The company’s internal email to affected employees, shared by multiple media outlets, offers insight into how Meta is managing the transition and communicating with its workforce.

Scope and Context of the Layoffs at Meta

The layoffs were announced on October 22, 2025, and primarily affect roles within Meta’s AI-focused Superintelligence Labs.

This division had been central to Meta’s ambitious AI development plans, including its Rs 1.2 lakh crore investment in AI infrastructure and talent.

Despite the layoffs, Meta has clarified that its AI ambitions remain intact. The restructuring is intended to optimize team operations rather than scale back innovation.

Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, stated in the internal memo that the decision was driven by a need to simplify organizational processes and enhance individual responsibilities.

“This is about optimizing how our teams operate, not about scaling back our AI ambitions,” Alexandr wrote.

Details from the Internal Email

The email sent to affected employees was direct, empathetic, and focused on next steps.

It acknowledged the contributions of those being let go and emphasized Meta’s commitment to supporting them through the transition.

The message included:

  • Notification of role elimination due to organizational changes
  • Assurance of severance packages and career support services
  • Encouragement to apply for other roles within Meta
  • Acknowledgment of the emotional impact of the decision

Meta’s leadership also reiterated the company’s long-term focus on building innovative products while meeting regulatory obligations.

Michel Protti, Meta’s Chief Privacy Officer, noted in a separate communication that the company is shifting from manual risk assessments to automated processes, which contributed to the reduction in risk team roles.

Strategic Priorities and Future Outlook

The layoffs reflect Meta’s broader strategy to prioritize efficiency and automation.

The company is investing heavily in AI-driven tools and platforms. These technologies are expected to reshape its workforce and product development cycles.

The Superintelligence Labs division at Meta saw job cuts.

However, other AI units such as the TBD Lab remain unaffected and continue to play a central role in the company’s innovation roadmap.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously outlined plans to eliminate around 3,600 positions globally. This accounts for roughly 5% of the company’s workforce.

These cuts are part of a phased restructuring that began earlier in 2025.
