Meta Engineers Rebuild Codebase to Let AI Edit and Fix Bugs

Mark Zuckerberg has issued a transformative mandate to Meta engineering teams, signaling a fundamental shift in how the social media giant builds and maintains its digital infrastructure.

The CEO has directed engineers to begin rewriting existing software code to ensure it is fully readable and modifiable by Artificial Intelligence, aiming to create a “self-healing” and self-optimizing ecosystem.

The Move Toward “Agentic” Engineering

The directive is part of Meta’s broader pivot toward “Agentic AI”—systems that do not just suggest code, but actively execute tasks.

By reformatting legacy code into formats more digestible for Large Language Models (LLMs), Meta intends to empower its Llama-based AI tools to autonomously identify bugs, suggest performance patches, and even implement feature updates without constant human intervention.

Currently, much of the world’s software is written in complex, fragmented layers that require human “translation” for AI to navigate safely.

Zuckerberg’s goal is to remove these barriers, creating a “machine-native” codebase that allows AI agents to act as autonomous collaborators alongside human developers.

Meta Boosting Developer Productivity and Infrastructure Speed

This internal initiative follows Meta’s massive investment in NVIDIA H100 GPUs and custom silicon.

Zuckerberg believes that the next bottleneck in tech isn’t just hardware, but the speed at which humans can write and ship code.

“We want our AI to be able to improve itself and the platforms it runs on,” Zuckerberg reportedly noted during an internal session.

By allowing AI to modify codebases in real-time, Meta hopes to drastically reduce the “technical debt” that plagues large-scale platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp.

This move is expected to free up human engineers to focus on high-level architectural design and creative innovation rather than routine maintenance.

Privacy and Security Guardrails

The plan has raised questions regarding safety.

Industry analysts warn that giving AI the “keys” to rewrite its own source code requires unprecedented security protocols to prevent cascading errors or unintended vulnerabilities.

Meta has responded by emphasizing a “human-in-the-loop” verification system for the initial rollout phase, ensuring that while AI proposes and prepares modifications, senior engineers retain final approval.
