Wipro Chief Culture Officer Sunita Cherian Retires After 29 Years

Sunita Rebecca Cherian, a cornerstone of Wipro leadership for nearly three decades, has officially announced her retirement from corporate life.
The Senior Vice President and Chief Culture Officer of Wipro Limited has chosen to “hang up her boots” after a distinguished 29-year journey that began in the mid-1990s.
Her retirement marks the end of an era for the Bengaluru-headquartered IT giant.
Sunita’s departure is not just the retirement of a high-ranking executive; it marks the conclusion of a rare “campus-to-corporate” success story.
This journey spanned nearly three decades, covering the most transformative years of the Indian software boom.
A Campus-to-C-Suite Journey
Sunita Rebecca Cherian’s association with Wipro began in 1996. She joined the company as a fresher directly from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum.
An Electrical and Electronics Engineer by training with a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, she bucked the modern trend of job-hopping, choosing instead to build her entire career within the walls of what she fondly describes as her “second home.”
Over the next 29 years, Sunita navigated the complexities of a global organization.
During her tenure, Wipro grew from a regional player into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise.
Her early years in Sales provided a customer-centric foundation, which she later translated into a formidable career in Human Resources.
Architect of “Inclusion” Framework at Wipro
Sunita’s legacy is most deeply felt in Wipro’s cultural and social initiatives.
As the Chair of Wipro’s Inclusion & Diversity Council, she was the driving force behind the “Women of Wipro” (WoW) initiative.
This program significantly accelerated the empowerment of female employees within the company, making it a case study for gender inclusion in the tech industry.
Her influence extended far beyond Wipro’s campus:
- Industry Leadership: She served as the Chair of the NASSCOM National Diversity & Inclusion Council.
- Global Impact: A member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council, she represented Indian IT leadership on the world stage.
- Cultural Transformation: In her final role as Chief Culture Officer, she spearheaded the “Five Habits” initiative, designed to pivot Wipro toward a high-growth, purpose-driven mindset.
Farewell to a “Second Home”
In a reflective farewell shared with her professional network, Sunita expressed deep gratitude for her mentors and team members.
She credited these colleagues for supporting her throughout her successful, nearly 30-year stint at the company.
Colleagues describe her as a leader who balanced rigorous organizational design with a deeply empathetic approach to talent management.
Sunita Rebecca Cherian’s tenure saw the company weather numerous economic cycles and leadership transitions.
During these critical junctures, she was often at the center of the workforce strategy, including the pivotal shift to remote work.
