Indian IT major Tech Mahindra is facing significant scrutiny as more than 1,000 engineering graduates remain in limbo due to prolonged onboarding delays.

Many candidates received intent letters and cleared multiple assessment rounds as far back as 2024.

However, they report that the company has yet to issue their official offer letters and joining dates.

The “Intent” vs. “Offer” Dilemma

The delay primarily affects freshers hired through campus recruitment and off-campus drives.

Affected candidates state they were initially selected and even completed various pre-boarding training modules.

However, the transition from an “intent to join” to a formal contract has stalled.

This uncertainty has left many graduates unable to seek other employment. They have been holding out for the promised roles at the tech giant.

Sources indicate that the delays are a byproduct of a cautious hiring environment across the IT sector.

Firms aggressively scouted talent during the post-pandemic boom.

However, shifting macroeconomic conditions and cost optimization have led to a “slow-walked” onboarding process for entry-level talent.

Tech Mahindra Internal Restructuring and Market Headwinds

Tech Mahindra has been undergoing a significant internal transformation under its new leadership, focusing on high-margin services and AI-driven efficiency.

Analysts suggest that this organizational shift, combined with a slowdown in demand from key verticals like banking and telecommunications, has prompted the firm to recalibrate its workforce intake.

While the company has not provided a specific timeline for when all pending freshers will be onboarded, it has previously maintained that it intends to honor its commitments.

However, the lack of clear communication has prompted various employee unions to raise concerns regarding the mental and financial strain on these young professionals.

Industry-Wide Trend

The situation at Tech Mahindra is not isolated.

Several other IT majors have faced similar challenges over the past year, citing project delays and reduced attrition rates as reasons for the backlog.

For freshers, the delay often means a gap in their career trajectory and a loss of relevant industry skills during the waiting period.
