In a move that signals a paradigm shift for the cryptocurrency industry, Coinbase Global, Inc. announced on May 5, 2026, that it is laying off approximately 700 employees.

This reduction represents roughly 14% of its global workforce as of May 1, 2026.

CEO Brian Armstrong described the restructuring as a deliberate effort to transform the exchange into a leaner, “AI-native” organization capable of navigating persistent market volatility.

The AI Inflection Point

A primary driver behind the job cuts is the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into the company’s daily operations.

Armstrong noted that AI tools have fundamentally changed how work is delivered, allowing engineers to “ship in days what used to take a team weeks”.

The company is moving toward a radical new organizational structure, which includes:

  • Flattening the Hierarchy: Limiting the organization to a maximum of five layers below the CEO and COO to reduce “coordination tax”.
  • AI-Native Pods: Experimenting with “one-person teams” where a single employee, supported by AI agents, handles engineering, design, and product management.
  • Player-Coach Leaders: Eliminating roles focused solely on management and requiring leaders to be hands-on contributors with up to 15+ direct reports.

Coinbase Market Volatility and Financial Impact

Despite describing the company as “well-capitalized,” Armstrong admitted that the business remains volatile due to the current crypto market downturn.

Coinbase expects to incur between $50 million and $60 million in restructuring charges, primarily for severance and termination benefits.

The layoffs and related financial charges are expected to be substantially completed within the second quarter of 2026.

Severance and Support

Impacted employees in the U.S. will receive a severance package consisting of at least 16 weeks of base pay, plus two weeks for every year of service.

The package also includes six months of healthcare coverage and support for visa holders, with comparable arrangements for international staff.
