The decisive operational pivot effectively eliminates the company’s entire Indian workforce.

This move lays off nearly 250 employees across its major technical and operational hubs in Chennai and Bengaluru.

The corporate exit marks a sharp shift away from traditional offshore outsourcing models.

This transition occurs as the company embraces localized, automation-first operations under its newly launched “Opendoor 2.0” framework.

“Customers Are in America”: The Logic Behind Onshoring Opendoor

The restructuring came to light via an internal corporate memorandum issued by Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian.

He subsequently posted the directive publicly on social media platform X.

In the announcement, Nejatian emphasized that geographic proximity to its primary consumer market was the central driver behind the relocation.

“Our customers are in America, and the operational work we do for them is best done close to them,” Nejatian stated, finalizing the transition of bringing remaining offshore roles back to the United States.

The tech company had historically built out an extensive workforce in India to handle manual workflows spread across fragmented backend systems.

However, leadership clarified that recent platform unifications have made substantial international back-office structures redundant.

The AI Pivot: Replacing Manual Backends with Tech

The winding down of the Indian operations highlights an intensifying industry trend where advanced software replaces manual human processes.

Under its “Opendoor 2.0” initiative, the property technology firm has replaced its legacy offshore systems.

The company has introduced small, localized, AI-native customer-facing teams throughout the United States.

The company is consolidating its software into a unified platform capable of seamlessly tracking a home’s lifecycle through the buying, renovation, and selling stages.

Consequently, Opendoor expects to run a much leaner organization with a lower headcount, relying on domestic staff to manage broader responsibilities amplified by proprietary AI-driven tools.

Transition Packages and High Commendation

Nejatian strongly emphasized that the layoffs do not reflect the quality or competence of the Indian team.

Commending their professionalism, the CEO even extended an open reference letter on social media to encourage other firms to hire the displaced personnel.

Impacted workers are receiving transition support packages that include severance pay, outplacement services, and temporary career transition resources.

Meanwhile, a small subset of the Indian team will remain on the payroll temporarily to finalize the migration of critical data workstreams.
