The clarification follows widespread speculation on social media after the tech giant announced plans to eliminate around 4,800 jobs globally, or nearly 2.1% of its workforce.

Several posts alleged that Microsoft was laying off American employees while continuing to hire foreign workers through the H-1B visa programme.

Key Highlights

  • Microsoft said most employees impacted by the latest layoffs were based outside the United States.
  • The company denied allegations that it laid off American workers to replace them with H-1B visa holders.
  • Microsoft clarified that employees on H-1B visas were also among those affected by the workforce reduction.
  • The layoffs were part of a business restructuring and were not linked to employees’ immigration or visa status.
  • The clarification comes amid renewed scrutiny of the H-1B visa programme, even as Microsoft continues expanding investments in AI and cloud technologies.

Responding to the claims, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, Frank X. Shaw, said the narrative circulating online was inaccurate and lacked context.

Majority of Impacted Employees Were Not Americans

In a post addressing the issue, Shaw said the majority of roles impacted by the layoffs were outside the United States.

He also clarified that the H-1B visa figures being cited online represented Microsoft’s company-wide workforce and were not specific to the teams affected by the latest restructuring, including the Xbox division.

According to the company, the layoffs were part of an organisational restructuring and were not intended to replace U.S. employees with H-1B visa holders.

H-1B Employees Also Affected

Microsoft also pointed out that employees working on H-1B visas were among those impacted by the workforce reduction, countering claims that the company was protecting visa holders while laying off American workers.

The company said the restructuring decisions were driven by business priorities, organisational changes, and the need to align resources with its long-term strategy, rather than employees’ nationality or visa status.

AI Investment Continues Amid Workforce Restructuring

The clarification comes as Microsoft continues to invest billions of dollars in artificial intelligence infrastructure, cloud services, and AI-powered products.

However, the company indicated that the latest layoffs should not be viewed as a direct consequence of AI replacing employees.

Like several global technology companies, Microsoft has been realigning its workforce while increasing investments in high-growth areas, including AI, cloud computing, and digital platforms.

H-1B Debate Resurfaces

The layoffs have once again reignited discussions around the H-1B visa programme in the United States.

As one of the largest sponsors of H-1B visas, Microsoft often faces scrutiny whenever it announces workforce reductions.

With its latest clarification, the company has sought to dispel speculation surrounding the layoffs, reiterating that the decisions were based on business requirements.

And that the majority of affected roles were outside the U.S., with H-1B employees also included in the impacted workforce.
