Cognizant Discloses Data Breach
In a notification to affected customers, Cognizant said it had no reason to believe that their information was misused but decided to inform them about the incident. The company also expressed regret and advised customers to contact it for more information.
According to Moneycontrol, media reports have attributed the breach to the cybercrime group CoinbaseCartel. The reports said Social Security numbers and other personal information were exposed. However, this attribution has not been independently confirmed by Cognizant in the information reviewed for this report.

The incident is significant for employers and HR teams because employee and customer information can include sensitive personal and financial details. Data protection and timely communication with affected individuals have therefore become important parts of corporate risk management.
24-Month Identity Protection Offered
Cognizant has offered affected customers identity theft protection through IDX, a data breach and recovery services provider. The company said the protection package includes:
- 24 months of credit and CyberScan monitoring
- $1 million insurance reimbursement policy
- Managed identity theft recovery services
- Support to resolve issues if an individual’s identity is compromised
Cognizant has also informed affected customers that they can file a police report or place a security freeze on their credit reports without paying a fee. A security freeze restricts access to a consumer’s credit report.

Data Security Remains an HR Concern
The Cognizant disclosure comes at a time when data security is receiving greater attention across the technology services industry. Moneycontrol reported that TCS, HCLTech and Hexaware had recently denied separate allegations concerning employee data leaks.
For HR departments, such incidents underline the need to protect employee records, limit access to sensitive information and maintain clear communication processes when a data security incident affects workers or customers.
The Cognizant case also shows the importance of providing affected individuals with practical support after a breach.
