Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has issued a direct call to action for Air India’s workforce, emphasizing that the airline must “stay grounded in reality” while aggressively pursuing cost control and service improvements.

Addressing a town hall at the airline’s headquarters on April 10, 2026, the Chairman reaffirmed the group’s unwavering commitment to the carrier despite a challenging financial and leadership landscape.

Tata Sons Focusing on Execution Amidst Headwinds

The address comes at a critical juncture for the national carrier. Chandrasekaran highlighted that while a “solid foundation” has been laid through the Vihaan.

AI transformation plan, the industry is currently navigating a “perfect storm.”

Air India faces mounting financial pressures, with projected losses for FY2026 expected to exceed ₹20,000 crore.

These deficits are fueled by external factors including geopolitical tensions, rising fuel surcharges, and the lingering impact of operational setbacks like the Ahmedabad crash.

“What matters now is staying focused on execution,” Chandrasekaran stated.

He urged employees to concentrate on variables within their control: being precise with costs, maintaining non-negotiable safety standards, and delivering a consistent, world-class customer experience.

Leadership Transition and Group Commitment

The town hall follows the high-profile resignation of CEO Campbell Wilson, who announced his early departure on April 7.

Despite this leadership churn and the ongoing hunt for a successor, Chandrasekaran sought to reassure the 17,000-strong workforce.

He noted that the “mechanical part” of the transformation—including the merger of four airlines into two and the modernization of core systems—is reaching a critical stage.

The Chairman encouraged staff to handle criticism objectively and maintain the “tenacity” they have shown over the last four years.

He reiterated that the Tata Group and the Board remain fully supportive of the management team as they bridge the gap until massive aircraft deliveries commence in 2027.
