Coal India Limited (CIL) has officially rolled out a mandatory uniform policy for its approximately 2.25 lakh employees.

Approved by the board on May 30, 2025, and implemented across all subsidiaries, the initiative aims to enhance the company’s brand image and foster a sense of professional identity among its workers.

Coal India Standardizing the Corporate Identity

Under the new “Scheme of Uniform Dress-Code,” the state-owned mining behemoth has prescribed specific attire for both male and female staff:

  • Male Employees: Navy blue trousers paired with sky blue shirts.
  • Female Employees: Two distinct options—light sky blue kurtas with navy blue salwars and dupattas, or light sky blue sarees featuring navy blue borders and matching blouses.

To facilitate the transition, each employee is being provided an advance of ₹12,500 specifically to purchase three sets of the new uniform.

Strategic Objectives and Branding

The primary goal of the dress code is to project a consistent, presentable image for the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).

Management believes that a uniform look will reinforce corporate branding, improve workplace discipline, and instill a stronger sense of belonging within the workforce.

The company has pledged to review the effectiveness and employee feedback regarding the scheme after one year of implementation.

Context of Operational Challenges

This administrative shift comes as Coal India, which accounts for over 80% of domestic coal production, navigates significant production targets

Despite recent output fluctuations, the company is aiming for an ambitious production target of 875 million tonnes for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Officials view the standardization of the workforce as a component of broader efforts to streamline operations and enhance professional presentation during this critical expansion phase.
