Internships Become a Stronger Route to Full-Time Jobs as PPOs Rise

Internships are becoming an increasingly important route to full-time employment as companies use the period to assess students before making Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), according to Deloitte India’s Campus Workforce Trends 2026 report.

The report found that internship-to-offer conversions improved by approximately 6% year-on-year across the degree categories covered.

Deloitte said the improvement reflects the growing role of internships in helping employers assess candidates and build early-career talent pipelines.

Companies Start Assessing Talent Earlier

Deloitte’s latest study shows that employers are investing earlier in the campus hiring process and using internships as an indicator of a candidate’s potential for long-term employment.

The report said 80% of organisations surveyed now have dedicated campus hiring teams. Companies are also moving towards more structured shortlisting and assessments, with greater focus on skills and practical capabilities.

This makes the internship period more important for students. Instead of being limited to work experience, an internship can give companies a longer opportunity to assess technical skills, problem-solving ability, learning agility and workplace fit before deciding on a full-time offer.

The trend follows a sharp rise in PPO conversions recorded in Deloitte’s previous campus hiring study.

In FY25, PPO conversions increased 24% year-on-year across degree programmes, showing that companies were already placing greater importance on internship-led hiring.

IT and Skills-Based Hiring in Focus

The technology sector remains an important part of India’s campus hiring landscape, while employers are increasingly looking for digital, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Deloitte’s 2026 report found that 86% of employers surveyed are adopting AI in recruitment. AI and data skills are attracting hiring premiums of 20–25%, while analytical thinking and problem-solving skills command premiums of 10–15%.

For fresh graduates, the changing hiring model means internships can play a bigger role in the transition from college to a full-time job. Students are increasingly required to demonstrate what they can do through projects, assessments and workplace assignments, rather than depending only on academic qualifications.

Deloitte’s 2026 study covered 257 organisations across manufacturing, services, pharma, consumer, financial services and technology, along with 505 campuses covering MBA, engineering and several other degree categories.

The findings suggest that the campus hiring process is moving towards earlier engagement, skills-based assessment and internship-to-hire programmes. For students, this makes the quality of internship work and performance increasingly important in securing a full-time opportunity.
