Truecaller, the popular caller identification and spam-blocking platform, has announced it will reduce its global workforce by approximately 70 employees.
The decision comes as the Swedish company grapples with a significant revenue slowdown in India, its largest and most critical market.
India Revenue Slump Triggers Truecaller Restructuring
For years, India has been the primary growth engine for Truecaller, accounting for nearly three-quarters of its total revenue.
However, the company’s latest financial reports indicate a sharp decline in income from the region.
This slump is largely attributed to a decrease in advertising demand and the implementation of new regulatory frameworks by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The introduction of the Calling Name Presentation (CNP) service by Indian authorities—which mandates that telecom operators provide caller ID services—has created direct competition for Truecaller’s core offering.
This shift has forced the company to re-evaluate its operational costs to maintain profitability.

Focusing on Efficiency and Core Growth
CEO Alan Mamedi stated that the workforce reduction, representing about 10% of the company’s staff, is a “necessary step” to ensure long-term financial health.
The layoffs are expected to streamline the organization and reduce annual expenses by approximately SEK 60 million ($5.7 million).
Despite the cuts, Truecaller is not retreating from India. Instead, it is shifting its strategy from high-volume growth to high-value monetization.
The company plans to focus heavily on its Truecaller for Business segment and premium subscription models to diversify its income streams away from traditional in-app advertising.
Market Outlook and Future Strategy
The news of the layoffs initially caused a dip in Truecaller’s stock price on the Nasdaq Stockholm.
However, analysts believe the cost-cutting measures will stabilize the company’s margins.
Moving forward, Truecaller aims to integrate more AI-driven features to stay ahead of government-mandated caller ID services and maintain its dominant position in the smartphone ecosystem.
