A palpable sense of anxiety has gripped the global workforce of Meta Platforms as the company approaches May 20, 2026—a date employees have dubbed “D-Day.”
Following an internal leak confirmed by Chief People Officer Janelle Gale, the social media giant is set to terminate approximately 8,000 employees, representing roughly 10% of its global headcount.
AI Pivot Triggers Structural Upheaval at Meta
The impending cuts are not merely a cost-saving exercise but a fundamental rewiring of the company’s DNA.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has signaled a shift toward “ultra-flat” management structures, where AI tools amplify individual productivity.
Zuckerberg recently noted that small teams, or even individuals, are now launching projects in a week that previously required dozens of engineers and months of development.
This “Year of Efficiency” evolution comes as Meta funnels a staggering $125–$145 billion into AI infrastructure.
CFO Susan Li admitted that the company is still determining its ideal size, as AI capabilities continue to redefine how much work a single person can accomplish.
For the remaining staff, this has translated into a high-pressure environment where performance reviews now include “AI-use grading” via internal tracking tools.

The “Ambiguity Period” and Employee Morale
Since the news broke in late April, Meta staff have endured nearly a month of what Gale described as “unsettling ambiguity.”
Anonymous posts on platforms like Blind suggest that internal morale has hit record lows, with employees sharing dark humor to cope with the stress of the unknown.
On May 20, impacted individuals will receive notification emails to both work and personal accounts, bringing an end to weeks of speculation.
To soften the blow, Meta has promised “generous” severance packages.
In the U.S., this includes 16 weeks of base pay plus two weeks for every year of service, along with 18 months of health insurance coverage.
Despite these provisions, the message from leadership remains stark: the company is being reshaped around smaller, AI-powered teams, and not every veteran role fits into this new vision.
