In a shocking development for India’s elite engineering graduates, tech giant Oracle has reportedly revoked numerous campus placement offers across the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
The move follows a massive global restructuring exercise that recently saw Oracle slash approximately 30,000 jobs worldwide, including over 12,000 roles in India.
Students “Hit Rock Bottom” at the Finish Line
The revocations have hit students just weeks before graduation, leaving high-achieving candidates in a state of professional limbo.
Estimates suggest that over 50 offers have been rescinded across major campuses, including IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Madras, and NIT-Warangal.
Many affected students had secured “Day 0” or “Day 1” offers—the most prestigious slots in the placement calendar.
Due to the strict “One Student, One Job” policy enforced by many premier institutes, these graduates were barred from applying to other companies.
Now, with the official placement season largely concluded, they are forced to restart their job hunt in a fragile market.

Oracle Internal Restructuring Cited as Cause
Internal communications and student accounts on platforms like LinkedIn and Reddit indicate that Oracle cited “internal restructuring and headcount-related challenges” for the sudden reversals.
One widely shared post from a top-performing student at NIT Warangal, who had secured a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) after an internship, noted that the withdrawal was entirely unrelated to candidate performance.
Institutional Response and Compensation
The All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) is currently in discussions with Oracle to address the crisis.
Established guidelines expect companies that rescind offers to provide three months’ salary as compensation.
While some institutes are considering blacklisting firms that fail to honor commitments, Oracle’s significant presence as a major recruiter makes such a decision complex.
In the interim, placement cells and alumni networks are working overtime to connect the displaced students with alternative opportunities in the tech and startup sectors.
