These specialists are becoming one of the most sought-after technology professionals as enterprises look for talent that can bridge the gap between AI innovation and business outcomes.

Industry experts say the emergence of this role reflects a broader shift in the IT services industry—from building AI models to successfully implementing them in real-world enterprise environments.

What Are Forward Deployed Engineers?

Forward Deployed Engineers are software professionals who work directly with customers to design, customize, and deploy AI-powered solutions.

Unlike traditional software developers, FDEs combine strong technical capabilities with business understanding and customer-facing skills.

The role was first popularized by US-based analytics company Palantir, where engineers work alongside clients to solve business problems using AI and software platforms.

According to staffing firm TeamLease Digital, hiring for Forward Deployed Engineers has grown at high double-digit rates.

During the first three quarters of 2025, demand for these professionals increased by nearly 800%, albeit from a relatively small base.

India currently has around 250–270 open FDE positions, making it an emerging market for this niche talent.

The growing demand is driven by enterprises that are moving beyond proof-of-concept projects and seeking professionals who can integrate AI solutions into existing business systems, ensuring faster deployment and measurable business value.

IT Firms Scale Up AI Deployment Teams

Several technology companies have already begun expanding teams dedicated to AI implementation.

Mid-tier IT services company Coforge plans to increase its Forward Deployed Engineer workforce from around 20 to 100 professionals by the end of the current financial year. Similarly, EPAM Systems aims to double its India-based FDE team from 50 to 100 engineers.

According to EPAM India, Forward Deployed Engineers help reduce AI development cycles, lower implementation costs, and improve the speed of enterprise AI adoption.

The role requires expertise in AI, data engineering, cloud technologies, and industry-specific business knowledge.

India’s IT Giants Strengthen AI Deployment Capabilities

While India’s largest IT companies may not always use the title “Forward Deployed Engineer,” they are investing heavily in similar customer-facing AI engineering roles as clients scale enterprise AI adoption.

TCS is expanding AI-led transformation through its WisdomNext platform and AI.Cloud business unit. The company is strengthening its AI talent pool to help enterprises deploy generative AI across business functions.
Infosys is driving enterprise AI adoption through its Infosys Topaz suite. The company has trained hundreds of thousands of employees in AI and generative AI technologies to support customer implementation and digital transformation projects.
Wipro continues to expand its ai360 initiative, backed by a $1 billion investment over three years, integrating AI into every client engagement while building AI capabilities across its workforce.
HCLTech is scaling enterprise AI through its AI Force platform and GenAI services, deploying teams that combine AI engineering, cloud expertise, and consulting to accelerate client AI programs.
Accenture has positioned AI as a strategic growth engine with its AI Refinery platform and a $3 billion investment in AI. The company has significantly expanded AI hiring and upskilling to support enterprise-wide AI deployments globally.

Although job titles differ—ranging from AI Consultant and AI Engineer to Solution Architect and GenAI Specialist—the objective remains the same: helping clients move AI from experimentation to production at scale.

Premium Skills Command Higher Salaries

The specialised nature of the role is also reflected in compensation.

According to TeamLease Digital, experienced Forward Deployed Engineers can earn annual salaries of around ₹40 lakh, approximately 23.7% higher than customer support engineers and 16% more than technical account managers.

However, hiring remains challenging because these professionals require a rare combination of advanced engineering expertise, consulting skills, and business acumen.

Industry experts note that some IT companies are repurposing solution architects and technical consultants to perform similar responsibilities, although organisations increasingly prefer professionals with dedicated AI deployment experience.

AI Talent Becomes a Strategic Priority

The rise of Forward Deployed Engineers signals the next phase of India’s AI talent evolution.

As enterprises increasingly demand production-ready AI solutions rather than standalone pilots, IT companies are shifting hiring priorities toward professionals who can combine technology expertise with customer engagement.
