IBM has announced the launch of the AI Builders Challenge, a global initiative aimed at helping university students develop practical artificial intelligence and software development skills for the future workplace.

The announcement was made during IBM’s Future of AI in Higher Education Summit in New York City and comes alongside the company’s expansion of free access to IBM Bob, its AI-powered development partner, to 20,000 post-secondary institutions worldwide.
Addressing the AI Skills Gap
The initiative arrives as organizations increasingly expect graduates to be proficient in AI tools and technologies. However, many students still lack opportunities to apply these skills in real-world environments before entering the workforce.
According to a recent survey by the American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon University, 63 percent of faculty members believe graduates are not adequately prepared to use generative AI in professional settings. IBM says the AI Builders Challenge is designed to help close this gap through hands-on learning and project-based experiences.

Building Real-World AI Development Skills
Delivered through IBM SkillsBuild, the challenge enables students to use IBM Bob to create projects aligned with real-world themes, including “Create with AI: The Future of Creative Industries,” “Mission Beyond Earth: Space Exploration,” and “Work Reimagined: Transforming Industries through Intelligent Work Systems.”
Unlike conventional AI coding assistants that primarily focus on code generation, IBM Bob supports developers throughout the software development lifecycle. The platform combines orchestration, execution, and governance capabilities, allowing participants to gain experience in developing, modernizing, and scaling software systems.
“AI is now part of how work gets done, and students entering the workforce need to know how to use it effectively and responsibly,” said Justina Nixon-Saintil, Vice President and Chief Impact Officer at IBM. She added that the challenge will help students build portfolio-ready projects while learning how to evaluate AI-generated outputs and explain the decisions behind their work.

Competition Format and Rewards
The challenge is open to eligible university students from all academic disciplines. Participants may compete individually or in teams and will submit projects through GitHub. Throughout the competition, students will have access to mentors, webinars, office hours, and a dedicated Discord community.
IBM has announced a total prize pool of $15,000. The overall Grand Prize winner will receive $5,000, while two monthly competitions will award additional prizes ranging from $750 to $2,250. Judging will be based on innovation, technical execution, feasibility, implementation quality, and alignment with challenge objectives.
Supporting AI Fluency Worldwide
The AI Builders Challenge forms part of IBM’s broader commitment to skill 30 million people by 2030. Through IBM SkillsBuild, the company provides free learning resources, digital credentials, faculty support, hands-on labs, and experiential learning opportunities designed to help learners move from AI literacy to AI fluency in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
Registration for the AI Builders Challenge opened on June 3, with monthly competitions scheduled to begin on July 1 and August 1.
