Wipro Expands Employee Productivity Tracking: What TimeScope Records

Wipro is expanding the use of its TimeScope productivity monitoring platform across India, allowing employees and managers to track digital work activity on company-issued laptops and desktops.

The rollout includes information on login duration, inactive periods and time spent on work-related applications.

According to an internal employee communication reviewed by Mint, Wipro initially deployed TimeScope to around 5,000 employees in May and has since started extending it to a broader section of its workforce.

What Does TimeScope Track?

The platform provides dashboards that allow employees to view their own activity records, while managers can access utilisation information for their teams. The system tracks login duration and periods of inactivity on company-issued devices.

Its active-time measurement reportedly includes usage of workplace applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Google Chrome.

The rollout is being extended across different employee groups, including:

• Fixed-price project teams
• Billable delivery roles
• Support functions
• Employees who are not currently assigned to projects

Wipro has stated internally that TimeScope does not monitor personal activities, keystrokes or screen content. The company has also clarified that timesheets remain the final source for effort reporting and project accounting.

Another aspect of the rollout is its link with attendance and leave management. According to the internal FAQ reviewed by Mint, leave deductions may be initiated when there is no evidence of attendance on a scheduled working day.

The company reportedly considers multiple records before such action, including device login activity, approved leave, office access swipe data and client-site visits. Employees can reportedly challenge a leave deduction if they believe it has been recorded incorrectly.

For HR teams, the development raises an important question about how digital activity data is used in workforce management. While application usage and login records can provide information about work activity, they do not necessarily indicate the quality, complexity or outcome of an employee’s work.

Wipro’s rollout comes as India’s IT services sector faces greater pressure to improve workforce utilisation and manage costs while investing in AI and automation. The use of productivity tracking tools is therefore becoming an increasingly relevant issue for employers, employees and HR teams.
