The headcount addition marks the third consecutive quarter of net workforce growth after TCS went through a global workforce restructuring in FY26.
The company had added 9,279 employees in the first quarter, taking net additions in the first half of FY27 to 13,537.
Attrition Falls, Learning Hours Increase
TCS reported 13.3% last-twelve-month (LTM) attrition in its IT Services business for Q2, compared with 13.6% in the previous quarter.

The figure indicates a modest sequential improvement in employee retention, although attrition remains an important workforce metric for the company as it changes its skill mix around AI and other emerging technologies.
At the same time, TCS reported a 17% sequential increase in employee learning hours to 17.1 million during the quarter.
The company said its investments in learning and critical skills are part of its effort to build a future-ready workforce.
Sudeep Kunnumal, Chief HR Officer, said the company continues to focus on upskilling employees and hiring talent, with learning and critical skills remaining an area of investment.

Fresher Hiring and AI Skills
TCS had rolled out offers to around 25,000 freshers by the end of Q1 FY27.
The company had earlier indicated that fresher hiring could be at similar levels to FY26, when it hired more than 40,000 freshers, although additions for FY27 would depend on business demand.
The company is also planning to add around 8,900 forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) as part of its AI-focused sales and consulting approach, according to the company’s hiring plans reported during the Q2 results cycle.
TCS reported annualised AI revenue of $3.1 billion in Q2 FY27, crossing 10% of its overall revenue.
The company said demand for AI-native solutions, AI-led transformation of enterprise systems and autonomous global business services is increasing.
What the Numbers Mean for TCS Workforce
TCS’s Q2 workforce numbers show a gradual recovery in employee additions after the restructuring seen in FY26.
The combination of higher headcount, lower attrition and increased learning hours also points to a stronger focus on retaining and reskilling employees as the company expands its AI-related business.
The workforce trend will remain important in the coming quarters, particularly as TCS balances fresher hiring with demand for specialised skills in AI, cloud, cybersecurity and other technology areas.
