Thousands of Meta Employees Received 4 A.M. Termination Emails

For thousands of Meta employees, the “Year of Efficiency” has evolved into a permanent state of restructuring. 

In the early hours of Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the silence was broken by the chime of notification pings as Meta began slashing approximately 8,000 jobs—roughly 10% of its global workforce. 

The notifications, which landed at 4:00 a.m. local time across various regional hubs, have sparked fresh criticism over the company’s “inhumane” termination tactics.

The 4 A.M. Wave: A Calculated Logistics Strategy

The timing of the emails was not accidental. 

According to a leaked memo from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale, the company utilized a phased rollout across three regional waves to manage the massive administrative burden of deactivating internal access. 

Employees in Singapore were among the first to receive the news, followed by colleagues in London and the United States.

To avoid chaotic scenes at the “MPK” headquarters and other global offices, Meta directed all staff to work from home, turning the layoff process into a remote, digital execution.

Meta Rebuilding for an “AI-Native” Future

This latest round of cuts is a core component of Mark Zuckerberg’s aggressive pivot toward artificial intelligence. 

While 8,000 roles were eliminated, another 7,000 employees are being reassigned to newly formed “AI-native” organizations.

• Flatter Structures: The memo highlighted a move toward “smaller pods” and fewer managerial layers to increase speed.
• Capital Shift: Meta has increased its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to a staggering $125–$145 billion, redirecting funds from human payroll to AI data centers and custom silicon.

Surveillance and Souring Morale

The layoffs coincide with a growing internal controversy regarding the Model Capability Initiative. 

Reports indicate Meta has been using software to track employee keystrokes and mouse movements to train its AI agents.

The company is essentially using the work of current employees to build tools that may eventually replace them.

Anonymous reviews on platforms like Blind suggest culture ratings have plummeted by nearly 40% as “surveillance anxiety” grips the remaining staff.

Meta cancelled 6,000 open roles, and more layoff waves are rumored for August.
