India’s Internet Gig Workforce by 2030: How Big Will It Be?

India’s internet-enabled gig workforce is expected to grow from more than 6 million monthly active workers today to 17–21 million by 2030, according to a report by Redseer Strategy Consultants.

The report tells the growing role of digital platforms in creating employment opportunities, saying the gig economy is set to become one of the country’s largest sources of new jobs over the next five years.

Gig Economy to Play a Bigger Role in Job Creation

The report, titled “Gig Internet Workforce in India: Bridge to ~20 Million Livelihoods,” estimates that the gig economy could contribute nearly 70% of India’s annual non-farm job creation requirement by 2030.

As digital platforms continue to expand across sectors such as food delivery, ride-hailing, logistics, home services, and e-commerce, they are expected to generate millions of new livelihood opportunities.

The study also projects that more than 30% of future gig workers will be first-time entrants into the workforce, highlighting the sector’s ability to bring more people into paid employment.

According to the report, 54% of surveyed gig workers were not engaged in any paid work before joining digital platforms, showing that the gig economy is opening doors for individuals who previously had limited access to employment.

Better Income and Career Opportunities

The report suggests that gig work is not only creating jobs but also improving earnings for many workers. It found that full-time gig workers can earn up to 2.5 times more per month than workers in similar formal and informal occupations.

Beyond income, gig work is also helping workers build valuable skills and work experience.

Nearly 70% of respondents said gig work has improved their long-term earning potential by enabling them to develop transferable skills, gain verified work experience, and access better employment opportunities in the future.

Women’s Participation Offers Strong Growth Potential

Redseer believes that increasing women’s participation in the gig economy represents one of the biggest opportunities for future growth.

The report notes that flexible work arrangements offered by digital platforms can help more women join the workforce, especially if companies continue to invest in safety measures, support systems, and inclusive workplace policies.

A Growing Part of India’s Employment Landscape

The report concludes that as India’s digital economy continues to expand, gig platforms are becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s employment ecosystem.

By creating flexible work opportunities, improving earning potential, and bringing more first-time workers into the labour market, the gig economy is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s future workforce and economic growth.
