India’s Gen Z is moving beyond the traditional “one job for life” mindset and embracing a new career model centred on flexibility, AI-powered skills and multiple income streams.

According to new research by International Workplace Group (IWG), the convergence of artificial intelligence, rising living costs, the gig economy, and flexible work is encouraging young professionals to build diversified “portfolio careers” rather than follow conventional career paths.
The report suggests that success for the next generation will increasingly depend on adaptability, entrepreneurial thinking and the ability to work alongside AI, rather than relying solely on technical expertise.
Side Hustles and AI Become Career Essentials
The study found that 33% of Gen Z workers already have or are considering a side hustle, with nearly half doing so to strengthen their financial security amid rising living costs. Key findings include:

- 33% already have or are planning a side hustle.
- 48% cite financial security as the biggest motivation.
- 55% believe AI will significantly reshape their careers.
- 65% of HR leaders believe AI cannot replace human empathy, reinforcing the growing importance of soft skills.
The findings are echoed in India, where Deloitte’s 2026 Gen Z and Millennial Survey found that over 90% of Gen Z professionals use AI in their daily work, primarily for learning, productivity and skill development.
As AI automates repetitive tasks, employers are expected to place even greater value on creativity, leadership, collaboration and adaptability.
Higher Pay Continues to Drive Job Switching

Financial growth remains the biggest motivator behind career decisions. According to the report, 43% of Gen Z professionals have changed jobs two or three times during the past three years, while 30% switched primarily for higher salaries.
Rather than climbing traditional corporate ladders, many young professionals are adopting “career lily pads”—strategically moving between roles, industries and projects to maximise earnings and remain financially resilient.
The trend is also supported by India’s expanding gig economy, with NITI Aayog projecting gig workers to increase from 7.7 million in 2020-21 to 23.5 million by 2029-30, creating more opportunities for freelance and project-based work.
Flexible Work Enables Portfolio Careers
The report highlights that workplace flexibility has become a critical enabler of Gen Z’s evolving career ambitions. Among the key findings:
- 65% say they would be less likely to pursue entrepreneurship or multiple income streams if required to commute long distances daily.
- 24% say hybrid work reduces commuting time, allowing them to invest more hours in side projects and upskilling.
- 20% believe flexible work helps them explore new career paths without leaving their primary job.
- 21% say it enables collaboration with professionals outside their primary industry.
The findings are particularly relevant for India, where long commuting hours in cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi often limit opportunities for learning, freelancing and entrepreneurial pursuits.
By reducing travel time, hybrid work allows young professionals to invest more time in skill development and additional income-generating activities.
A Shift Towards the Future of Work
The report concludes that Gen Z is redefining career success by prioritising flexibility, continuous learning and diversified income sources over traditional long-term employment.
AI, hybrid work and the rapid growth of the gig economy are accelerating this transition, making portfolio careers an increasingly attractive option for India’s youngest workforce.
Commenting on the findings, Harsh Lambah, Country Manager, India and Vice President, Sales, South Asia at IWG, said Gen Z is entering the workforce at a time of significant change, with AI reshaping jobs across industries.
He noted that flexible workspaces located closer to where people live are helping young professionals reclaim valuable commuting time, enabling them to upskill, collaborate and build additional income streams while pursuing the careers they aspire to.
