Australia’s national carrier, Qantas, is considering outsourcing up to 1,000 corporate roles to India as part of a wider business transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, according to media reports.

The outsourcing plan is reportedly being discussed with global consulting firm Accenture under an internal transformation programme called Project iQ.
If implemented, the initiative could affect employees in corporate support functions such as human resources, finance, procurement, marketing, and customer service.
The airline is exploring ways to streamline back-office processes while increasing the use of AI and automation across its business.

No Final Decision Yet
Qantas has clarified that the proposal is still under evaluation and that no final decision has been taken. The airline said it is assessing different options to strengthen its technology capabilities and improve business operations.
It also stated that discussions with external partners remain at an early stage and no formal agreement has been signed.
The airline added that while it continues to explore AI-driven transformation, it remains committed to investing in customer-facing services and operational roles in Australia.
According to the company, the objective is to improve efficiency without compromising customer experience or service quality.

Union Raises Concerns Over Job Security
The reported outsourcing plan has drawn criticism from employee unions in Australia. The Australian Services Union (ASU) has expressed concern that shifting corporate roles overseas could affect local employment and reduce opportunities for Australian workers.
Union representatives have urged Qantas to be transparent about its plans and consult employees before making any major workforce decisions.
They also argued that AI should be used to support employees and improve productivity rather than replace jobs or move them to lower-cost locations.
If the proposal moves forward, it would be one of Qantas’ biggest corporate restructuring initiatives in recent years.
The development also reflects a growing global trend, with many organisations using AI, automation and offshore delivery centres to optimise business operations and reduce costs.
India continues to be a preferred destination for global capability centres and business process operations because of its skilled talent pool, technology expertise and cost advantages.
