The company said its first batch of frontier-assessed and deployment-ready engineers will be unveiled in the fourth quarter of 2026.
It also plans to strengthen its AI talent pipeline by hiring frontier-native graduates annually from universities in the US and other global markets.
AI Talent to Drive Enterprise Transformation
Explaining the need for this new talent model, Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar said organisations now need professionals who can combine deep industry knowledge with AI expertise to deliver measurable business outcomes.

Closing the AI outcome gap demands talent who not only understands a client’s industry deeply but can also reimagine the way work is structured and take end-to-end responsibility for delivering results in collaboration with clients, on any model or cloud the client selects,” Kumar said.
According to the company, these professionals will work closely with clients to redesign workflows, deploy AI solutions, and ensure organisations realise the full value of their AI investments.
What Are Frontier Deployed Engineers?

The concept of Frontier Deployed Engineers (FDEs), popularised by data analytics company Palantir, refers to software engineers who work directly within a client’s environment rather than from a traditional delivery centre.
Unlike enterprise architects, FDEs bridge the gap between business and technology. They help organisations identify AI opportunities, integrate AI into existing technology stacks, deploy intelligent solutions, and accelerate enterprise-wide AI adoption.
Cognizant said its frontier model is built on six core principles:
- Interdisciplinary expertise
- Direct focus on customer value
- Routine collaboration with AI agents
- End-to-end accountability
- Delivery through small operational pods
- A unified Cognizant experience for clients
Demand for AI Specialists Soars
The announcement comes amid a sharp rise in demand for AI deployment specialists.
According to TeamLease Digital, demand for Frontier Deployed Engineers surged by nearly 800% during the first three quarters of 2025, albeit from a relatively small base.
Globally, there are an estimated 500–800 active FDE roles at any given time, while India has around 250–270 open positions, underscoring its growing role as a global hub for advanced AI talent.
As enterprises move from AI experimentation to large-scale implementation, companies like Cognizant are investing heavily in specialised talent capable of translating AI capabilities into real business outcomes.
