TCS, Wipro Resume New Town Campus Projects in Kolkata

Construction of the long-delayed campus projects of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro in New Town is set to resume after the West Bengal government cleared the developments following stringent safety inspections.

Work had halted after the state government placed a temporary ban on the construction of commercial and residential structures of G+5 and above following the tragic collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Garden Reach, which claimed 16 lives.

State authorities subsequently reviewed individual building plans before granting permission to restart construction.

TCS to Build 20-Acre Campus

TCS is developing a 20-acre campus at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town. Planned for execution in phases, the strategic facility is expected to generate approximately 25,000 direct employment opportunities upon full completion.

In June 2025, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) sanctioned the building plan for the project’s first phase. Covering 9 lakh square feet, Phase 1 includes an 11-storey office building designed to accommodate around 5,000 tech professionals.

TCS already employs nearly 55,000 people in West Bengal, making it one of the largest private-sector employers in the state.

Wipro’s Second Campus Moves Ahead

Wipro, which currently employs around 11,000 people across West Bengal, had acquired 50 acres in New Town to establish its second campus.

In 2022, Rishad Premji, Executive Chairman of Wipro, stated that construction of the new facility would begin within months. Although the project remains in its initial setup stages, this latest regulatory approval allows civil construction to proceed.

Projects Cleared after Safety Review

On Monday, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Administrator Smita Pandey announced that 11 major projects under KMC jurisdiction were cleared to restart construction.

Sources noted that two projects under Maheshtala Municipality and three key projects under the NKDA, including the TCS and Wipro campuses, were also approved.

Civic officials confirmed that formal approval letters were issued on Tuesday, enabling developers to recommence structural work.

Developers Welcome the Decision

Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group, confirmed that four of his group’s five stalled projects had secured official clearance.

He stated that contractors were instructed to bring workers back to the construction sites immediately following the clearance orders. Neotia praised the state government and civic authorities for completing thorough structural inspections within a tight timeframe before permitting work to resume.
