PM Modi Announces AI Skilling for 1 Crore Youth, and New Targets

New Delhi, August 15, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on the 80th Independence Day, announced a series of initiatives focused on AI skilling, education, sports, semiconductor manufacturing, nuclear energy and women-led development.

AI Skilling for One Crore Youth

The biggest announcement was a nationwide programme to train one crore youth in Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills within the next year.

The Prime Minister said India must prepare its young population for the fast-growing AI economy by equipping them with future-ready digital skills.

The initiative is expected to support industries facing rising demand for AI talent across technology, manufacturing, healthcare, finance and public services.

Free Online Coaching Network

To make quality education more accessible, the Prime Minister announced a free online coaching network for students preparing for competitive examinations.

The platform will combine Digital Public Infrastructure, experienced teachers and educational institutions to provide coaching at no cost, reducing the financial burden on poor and middle-class families.

Sports Talent Hunt from Age Five

A nationwide sports talent hunt will identify promising athletes aged 5 to 15 years from villages, towns and schools across India.

Selected children will receive specialised training, with greater focus on Olympic disciplines where India seeks stronger representation in future international competitions.

Civil Defence for Modern Challenges

Recognising changing security threats, the Prime Minister announced the creation of a modern Civil Defence network.

Unlike traditional models focused on border conflicts, the new system will prepare citizens and volunteers to respond to disruptions affecting critical infrastructure such as banks, data centres, refineries and factories.

Semiconductor and Nuclear Push

To strengthen technological self-reliance, the Prime Minister said India will expand its semiconductor ecosystem beyond the three plants already operational.

Five to eight additional semiconductor plants are planned over the next several years, creating new opportunities for engineers, technicians and manufacturing professionals.

He also reaffirmed India’s target of 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047. He announced plans to begin five new nuclear reactors within this decade to meet the growing energy demand from AI, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres.

Lakhpati Didi Target Doubled

The government has raised its ambition for women’s economic empowerment by increasing the Lakhpati Didi target from three crore to six crore women.

The expanded programme aims to strengthen rural entrepreneurship and increase household incomes through women-led enterprises.
