The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has clarified the eligibility conditions for employees to join the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance (EDLI) following the government’s decision to increase the statutory wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

The revised wage ceiling came into effect on September 17, 2026. The change extends mandatory social security coverage to eligible employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month in EPFO-registered establishments.

Who is eligible for EPF, EPS and EDLI?

According to EPFO’s clarification shared on social media, employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month in establishments covered under EPFO will be mandatorily covered under EPF, EPS and EDLI, subject to applicable membership conditions.

Employees earning up to ₹15,000 per month can also become members of these schemes under the applicable provisions.

The three schemes provide different benefits:

  • EPF: Helps employees build a retirement savings corpus through monthly contributions from employees and employers.
  • EPS: Provides a monthly pension after retirement, subject to eligibility and the required service period.
  • EDLI: Provides life insurance benefits to the nominee or family of an eligible EPF member in case of the member’s death.

How will the revised wage ceiling affect PF contributions?

The increase in the wage ceiling can result in higher monthly PF contributions for employees whose contributions were earlier restricted to ₹15,000.

For instance, at a PF wage of ₹20,000, an employee’s 12% contribution would amount to ₹2,400 per month, compared with ₹1,800 under the earlier ₹15,000 wage ceiling.

Higher contributions can help employees accumulate a larger retirement corpus over time, along with applicable interest.

The employer also makes contributions towards EPF and EPS, depending on the employee’s eligibility under the pension scheme.

What employers and employees should check

The revised wage ceiling makes it important for employers to review employee eligibility and payroll contributions.

Employees should check their EPF passbooks to ensure that the applicable contributions are being deposited. Employers should also review payroll calculations and ensure that eligible employees are enrolled under the applicable schemes.

The revision is expected to extend statutory social security coverage to a larger section of India’s organised workforce.
