The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to file provident fund returns and deposit statutory contributions for September 2026 from October 15 to October 31. The extension gives employers 16 additional days to complete compliance formalities following the revision of the PF wage ceiling.

Why Has EPFO Extended the Deadline?
EPFO extended the deadline following representations from employers and other stakeholders who reported technical, operational and administrative difficulties after the revision of the statutory PF wage ceiling.
The wage ceiling for mandatory EPF coverage was increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026. The mid-month change required employers to review payroll systems, employee-wise contribution calculations and statutory compliance records.
The extension gives establishments additional time to complete the filing and payment process accurately. It applies specifically to the September 2026 wage month.

What Should Employees Check?
Although employers are responsible for filing provident fund returns and depositing contributions, employees can check their records to ensure their contributions are correctly reported.
Employees should:
- Check PF contributions: Review the EPF passbook after the employer files the return and the contributions are credited.
- Verify salary details: Check whether September salary and contribution records are consistent with the applicable PF rules.
- Follow up on missing credits: Contact the payroll or HR team if contributions are not reflected in the account after the filing and payment process.
- Seek clarification on deductions: Ask the employer to explain any discrepancies between salary slips and PF records.
Employees do not need to file a separate Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) themselves. This is an employer compliance requirement.

What Employers Need to Do
Employers should use the additional time to review September payroll data, verify employee-wise contribution calculations and update their payroll systems wherever necessary.
They must complete the ECR filing and deposit the applicable statutory contributions by October 31, 2026. The extension provides additional time for compliance but does not waive the obligation to file returns or pay contributions.
Employers should also ensure that the revised wage ceiling is applied in accordance with the applicable rules and that contribution records match payroll data.
Final Comments
The deadline extension gives employers additional time to address payroll and compliance challenges arising from the PF wage ceiling revision.
Employees should review their PF records after the September return is processed, while HR and payroll teams should ensure that contributions are calculated and reported correctly before October 31.
