The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has advised employees earning up to ₹25,000 per month to check their provident fund enrolment with their employers following the revision of the wage ceiling for mandatory EPF coverage. The revised ceiling increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month with effect from September 17, 2026.

The government expects the change to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory EPFO coverage. Eligible employees can access provident fund savings, pension benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance protection under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme, subject to the applicable rules.
EPFO Wage Ceiling Revised After 12 Years
The previous wage ceiling of ₹15,000 per month had remained unchanged since September 2014. The Union Cabinet approved the increase on September 16, 2026, and the revised ceiling came into effect the following day.
The revision takes into account rising wages, higher income levels and the expansion of formal employment. It is intended to extend statutory social security coverage to eligible employees who were previously excluded because their wages exceeded the earlier limit.

The revised ceiling applies to eligible employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month who meet the other conditions under the applicable provisions. Employees should confirm their eligibility with their employer rather than assume that coverage is automatic in every case.
PF, Pension and Insurance Benefits
EPFO has highlighted the following benefits for eligible employees:
- Provident Fund: Retirement savings through employee and employer contributions, with interest credited under applicable EPF rules.
- Pension: Benefits under EPS, subject to the scheme’s membership and eligibility conditions.
- Life insurance: Insurance protection under EDLI, with the maximum assurance benefit capped at ₹7 lakh, subject to the scheme’s provisions.

How Much Will an Employee Earning ₹25,000 Contribute?
At the standard contribution rate of 12%, an employee earning ₹25,000 in applicable monthly wages would contribute ₹3,000 towards EPF. The employer’s contribution would also be ₹3,000 under the standard structure.
For an employee eligible for EPS membership, the employer’s contribution may be divided as follows:
- ₹2,083 approximately: Employer contribution towards EPS, calculated at 8.33% of ₹25,000.
- ₹917 approximately: Remaining employer contribution towards EPF.
- ₹3,000: Employee contribution towards EPF.
Under this illustration, ₹3,917 would be credited to the employee’s EPF account each month, while the employer’s EPS contribution would be accounted for separately.
These figures are illustrative and assume that the full ₹25,000 qualifies as applicable wages. Actual contributions depend on the relevant provisions, scheme rules and the employee’s membership status.
What Employees Should Do
Employees earning up to ₹25,000 per month should contact their HR or payroll department to check their eligibility and enrolment status.
They should also review their Universal Account Number (UAN), EPF passbook and contribution records to ensure that applicable contributions are being deposited.
The revised wage ceiling expands access to formal retirement savings and related social security benefits. However, EPF coverage, EPS membership and the benefits payable under each scheme remain subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.
