Vizag Set to Become Major Digital Infrastructure Hub, May Create 52,000 Jobs

Visakhapatnam, popularly known as Vizag, is emerging as a major digital infrastructure hub, with proposed data centre projects expected to create around 51,840 jobs, according to a research report cited by the Andhra Pradesh government.

The report by Square Yards estimates that the proposed 1,080 MW data centre capacity in Vizag could generate 3,240 direct jobs and another 48,600 jobs across allied sectors.

These include construction, electrical works, logistics, warehousing, transportation, hospitality, retail, maintenance and other support services.

Data Centres to Drive Wider Employment

The expected employment impact is not limited to jobs within data centre campuses. The growing ecosystem is likely to increase demand for power, fibre connectivity, utilities, cooling systems, logistics and commercial infrastructure.

As more companies and workers move into the region, the development could also create opportunities in facilities management, real estate, retail, hospitality and other support services. This could make data centre investments an important source of employment beyond the technology sector.

The report identifies Visakhapatnam as the core digital hub for Andhra Pradesh. At the state level, Andhra Pradesh ranks third nationally in proposed lifetime data centre capacity, behind Maharashtra with 2,500 MW and Karnataka with 1,300 MW.

Residential and Urban Demand to Rise

The expansion is also expected to have a significant impact on the city’s real estate and urban infrastructure.

The proposed data centre ecosystem could generate demand for around 5.18 crore sq ft of urban space, while residential demand linked to the projected workforce is estimated at approximately 2.33 crore sq ft. Commercial spaces, warehouses, retail centres and civic infrastructure are also expected to see increased demand.

The growth comes as demand for data centres continues to increase with the expansion of cloud computing, artificial intelligence and data-intensive digital services.

With major investments already announced in Visakhapatnam, the city is positioning itself to play a larger role in India’s digital infrastructure growth and could become an important new employment centre outside the country’s traditional technology hubs.
