The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has shifted key Universal Account Number (UAN) services to the UMANG app, allowing members to generate, activate and authenticate their UAN through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.

The change applies to both new EPF members and existing members whose UAN is yet to be activated.
The EPFO member portal now clearly states that direct UAN allotment and UAN activation through the portal have been discontinued. Members are directed to use the UMANG app and select the relevant UAN service under Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
UAN Generation and Activation Through UMANG
Employees who do not have a UAN can use the ‘UAN Allotment and Activation’ service on UMANG. They need a valid Aadhaar number, an Aadhaar-linked mobile number and the Aadhaar Face RD application.

After entering the Aadhaar and mobile details, the member has to verify the OTP and complete face authentication. If the Aadhaar is not already linked to a UAN, the system generates a new UAN and sends it to the registered mobile number.
Existing EPF members who already have a UAN but have not activated it can select ‘UAN Activation’ on UMANG. After Aadhaar, mobile and OTP verification, the member completes face authentication. Once successful, the UAN is activated and a temporary password is sent through SMS.
What Services Can Members Use?
Once the UAN is activated, members can continue to access several EPFO services. These include:

- Checking EPF balance
- Downloading the EPF passbook
- Tracking claim status
- Managing KYC-related services
- Completing face authentication for an already activated UAN
For an already activated UAN, the UMANG app also provides a separate ‘Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs’ facility. The verified information is updated in EPFO records.
What Employees Need Before Starting
Members should keep the following ready:
- Valid Aadhaar number
- Mobile number linked with Aadhaar
- UMANG app
- Aadhaar Face RD application
- A smartphone that can complete face authentication
The move is part of EPFO’s wider effort to simplify UAN generation and activation through Aadhaar-based digital verification. EPFO had introduced UAN generation and activation through Face Authentication on UMANG in April 2025.
Final Words
For employees, the important change is simple: if a new UAN needs to be generated or an existing UAN needs to be activated, the process should now be completed through UMANG rather than the EPFO member portal.
