In a milestone for India’s aviation and technology sectors, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has officially launched its first-ever Global Innovation Center (GIC) outside the United States.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the airline inaugurated its 20,000-square-foot facility in Hyderabad, signaling a massive recruitment drive that aims to add 1,000 high-skilled professionals to its roster over the next few years.

Beyond Back-Office: A Hub for Deep Tech

Unlike traditional outsourcing centers, Southwest’s Hyderabad office is designed as a core technology-led innovation hub.

The facility will operate under a wholly owned subsidiary, Southwest Airlines India Private Limited, and will focus on “technology-infused” business capabilities rather than simple back-office support.

The airline’s leadership emphasized that the center will be integral to its global network. Key areas of focus include:

  • AI & Machine Learning: Developing predictive models for flight operations and customer experience.
  • Cloud & Platform Engineering: Scaling the airline’s digital infrastructure.
  • Cybersecurity: Protecting enterprise data across global operations.
  • Data Science: Utilizing analytics to enhance reliable and efficient airline performance.

Why Southwest Airlines Chose Hyderabad?

Lauren Woods, Executive Vice President and CIO of Southwest Airlines, noted that the company evaluated several major Indian cities before choosing Hyderabad.

She cited the city’s deep pool of engineering talent, proximity to top-tier universities, and its mature aerospace ecosystem as deciding factors.

The center was inaugurated by Telangana’s IT and Industries Minister, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, who highlighted that the investment reinforces Hyderabad’s status as a strategic center where aviation, space-tech, and deep-tech converge.

He noted that over 450 Global Capability Centers (GCCs) currently operate in the city, employing over 1.35 lakh professionals.

Immediate Hiring and Future Growth

The airline has already onboarded an initial core team. It expects to scale to 200 staff members in the near term before reaching the 1,000-employee mark.

Hiring will span from entry-level engineers to senior leadership roles. This offers local talent the opportunity to build careers within one of the world’s most admired airlines.
