Honda Motor is encouraging employees to build artificial intelligence (AI) skills by introducing a monthly incentive of up to ¥135,000 (around US$920) for those who earn internal AI certifications.

This shows the company’s focus on preparing its workforce for an AI-driven future and making AI skills a part of career growth.

AI Skills Now Come with Financial Rewards

The bonus is linked to a three-level AI certification programme. Employees must clear a written test and an interview that assess both their understanding of AI and their ability to apply it in their jobs.

The higher the certification level, the larger the monthly incentive.

Only a Few Employees Have Qualified So Far

Honda currently employs around 45,000 people, but only 280 employees have achieved AI certification. Fewer than 10 employees have reached the highest certification level, making them eligible for the maximum monthly bonus.

The company plans to increase the number of AI-certified employees to around 1,000 over the next few years. These employees will also help train colleagues and support the wider use of AI across different business functions.

Building an AI-Ready Workforce

Honda believes AI can improve productivity, speed up routine work, and support better decision-making. By rewarding employees who develop AI expertise, the company hopes to encourage more people to learn and use AI in their everyday work.

The initiative also sends a clear message that AI skills will play an important role in future roles and career progression within the company.

A Growing Trend in Japan

Honda is among a small number of Japanese companies offering direct financial incentives for AI skills. FamilyMart has started including AI usage as one factor in employee performance evaluations, while All Nippon Airways (ANA) has rewarded teams that create AI-based solutions for business challenges.

As companies continue to invest in AI, linking skills to compensation could become a more common approach to building future-ready workforces.
