Enterprise software leader Workday has announced plans to maintain its aggressive workforce expansion in India, fueled by a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence and the country’s growing prominence as a global innovation hub.

Sunil Jose, President of Workday India, confirmed on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, that the company would sustain its current hiring pace to support both internal operations and customer-facing AI products.

Workday Doubling Headcount in Record Time

Over the past 12 to 14 months, Workday’s presence in India has scaled dramatically.

The company’s local headcount has more than doubled, reaching approximately 1,300 employees.

Currently operating out of Mumbai and two other major cities, the firm is preparing to expand its physical footprint with new offices planned for Delhi and Bengaluru.

India is now home to more than half of the world’s Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

Sunil noted that the region’s large pool of skilled tech talent and lower operating costs make it an ideal base for high-value roles in engineering and finance.

AI-Driven Business Transformation

The expansion coincides with a deeper investment in generative AI.

Workday’s AI agents are being increasingly deployed across payroll, expense management, and recruitment workflows.

Sunil highlighted a specific case where a global retailer utilized these tools to reduce hiring times by a staggering 70%.

“Automated processes are now enabling companies to quicken nearly two-thirds of tasks that once required significant manual effort,” Sunil stated.

By leveraging India’s expertise in data science and machine learning, Workday aims to protect its business model against industry concerns that AI could disrupt traditional software services.

Strategic Market Growth

Workday currently serves over 1,800 customers in India, contributing to its global base of 11,500 clients, which includes tech giants like Nvidia, Netflix, and Target.

Multinational firms are ramping up hiring for automation-centric roles.

Consequently, Workday’s commitment to the Indian market reinforces the country’s status as a critical engine for enterprise technology.
