He is expected to assume his new role in September and will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific.

The appointment comes as OpenAI expands its presence in India, one of its fastest-growing markets for artificial intelligence (AI) adoption.

To Lead OpenAI’s India Growth

As OpenAI’s senior-most executive in India, Prabhjeet will lead the company’s operations across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and overall business operations.

His appointment comes at a time when global AI companies are strengthening their presence in India through partnerships with enterprises, governments, and technology firms.

OpenAI has been increasing its investments in the country as demand for generative AI continues to grow across industries.

India Becomes a Key Market for OpenAI

India has emerged as one of OpenAI’s most important markets. The company recently said that Indian users are among the world’s most active users of ChatGPT’s advanced features, including coding, data analysis, and education.

OpenAI has also partnered with the Tata Group to explore AI technologies and data centre infrastructure, a collaboration that could support one of the country’s largest AI infrastructure projects.

With businesses increasingly adopting AI solutions, Singh’s appointment signals OpenAI’s intent to strengthen its local leadership and deepen engagement with enterprises, developers and policymakers.

A Decade at Uber

Prabhjeet Singh joined Uber in 2015 after working as an Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company. During his nearly ten-year stint, he led Uber’s mobility business across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, overseeing the company’s expansion and growth in the region.

An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Prabhjeet played a key role in scaling Uber’s operations and launching several initiatives aimed at improving mobility services across South Asia.

Confirming his departure, an Uber spokesperson said the company appreciates Singh’s contributions during his decade-long journey and remains committed to its next phase of growth in India. Uber has not yet announced his successor.
