N Chandrasekaran Reappointed Tata Sons Executive Chairman for Next 5 Years

N Chandrasekaran has been approved for a fresh five-year term as Tata Sons Executive Chairman, reversing his earlier decision not to seek reappointment after February 20, 2027.

The development comes soon after RBI rejected Tata Sons’ request to surrender its CIC registration, keeping the company under the Upper Layer NBFC framework and subject to listing requirements.
As Executive Chairman, Chandrasekaran will continue to lead Tata Sons, the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies, and oversee the group’s overall direction through its board and operating companies.
Extensive Experience
Chandrasekaran has spent nearly four decades with the Tata Group, beginning his career at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1987. He held several technology and business leadership roles before becoming Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director.

In October 2009, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TCS. He served in the role until 2017, completing around eight years as CEO and MD. Overall, he spent about 30 years at TCS across different roles.

During his tenure at TCS, he worked across the IT services, consulting and business solutions industry. He was also involved in the company’s global business operations and expansion across international markets.
In October 2016, Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Sons board as a director. In January 2017, he was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons, taking charge from February 21, 2017.
He has since chaired the holding company and several Tata group companies, including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Air India, Tata Consumer Products and Indian Hotels.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences and a Master’s degree in Computer Applications from institutions in Tamil Nadu.
