Chandrasekaran has been chairman of Tata Sons since 2017 and was reappointed for a second five-year term in 2022. His current term is scheduled to end in February 2027.

The development is significant for the Tata Group as the chairman of Tata Sons plays a central role in overseeing the group’s overall direction and its major businesses. Tata Sons is the principal holding company of the Tata Group.

Chandrasekaran to Complete Current Term

The decision comes after the Tata Sons board had deferred discussions on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment.

According to reports, Noel Tata had sought certain commitments regarding the group’s governance, including that Tata Sons would not be listed. Chandrasekaran was reportedly not willing to provide such a commitment. Tata Sons has not publicly confirmed these details.

The disagreement between Noel Tata and N Chandrasekaran was not limited to keeping Tata Sons unlisted and also extended to issues related to board representation.

Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and rose through the ranks at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), where he became CEO in 2009. He was appointed chairman of Tata Sons in 2017, succeeding Cyrus Mistry, and was given a second term in 2022.

Tata Sons oversees a large group of companies, including TCS, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Consumer Products and Tata Digital. Tata Trusts holds about 66% of the equity capital of Tata Sons.

For the HR and business community, the development puts succession planning and leadership continuity in focus.

Tata Sons has not yet publicly announced who will succeed Chandrasekaran, and names being discussed in media reports should be treated as unconfirmed until there is an official announcement.

Chandrasekaran is expected to remain chairman until February 2027, when his current term ends. This gives the Tata Group time to decide on the next leadership structure and complete the transition at the group holding company.
